15 Years of Experience

Welcome to Method Dog Training, where science meets compassion in the world of dog training. I’m Joanna Elliott, the heart, mind and driving force behind this endeavor, and I’m thrilled to introduce myself to you.

Life's most beautiful experiences often come from the simplest of bonds, like the unwavering love and loyalty between a dog and a human. In their eyes, we find a reflection of our best selves, and in their presence, we learn the true meaning of unconditional love.

With over 15 years of hands-on experience working with dogs of all breeds, ages, and backgrounds, my journey into dog training was born from a profound desire to bridge the gap of misinformation, confusion, and biases that often surround our canine companions. While my academic background is in physics, my true calling has always been understanding the intricate relationship between humans and dogs.

Unlocking the Connection Between Dogs and Humans

In my exploration of behavioral sciences for dogs and humans, I’ve come to appreciate that communication between species is a nuanced dance. Humans often have unspoken expectations of themselves or their dogs, which may not always align with reality. As a dog trainer, I believe in addressing not only the dog’s needs but also taking into account the full breadth of the environment the dog lives and exists in, including the readiness and commitment of the owners. The true reward in my work is witnessing the genuine connection that forms when people and dogs understand each other deeply.

Dedicated to Staying Informed &

Advocacy for Shelter Dogs and Rescue Organizations

As a scientist, I have a deep commitment to staying informed about the latest research, studies, and training methodologies in the world of dog behavior. This dedication ensures that my approach to training is as dynamic and adaptable as the dogs and people I work with.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating closely with rescue organizations, fosters, and shelters. This experience has given me a profound understanding of the unique challenges that rescue dogs face and the incredible transformations that are possible with the right guidance and love. At Method Dog Training, we are passionate advocates for shelter dogs, and we are here to support you on your journey with your rescue canine companion.

Our Training Process

The 'Method'

Priority on positive interactions between owners and dogs: Our training sessions focus on reinforcing good behavior rather than punishing bad behavior.

Acknowledgment of each dog’s uniqueness tailoring a personalized approach: We recognize that each dog has its own temperament and needs and therefore structure training accordingly. We create customized training plans to suit the specific needs of each dog. and family.

Building a strong bond between the dog and owner: Using training as an opportunity for the dog to trust and respect the owner, strengthening their relationship.

Assessment of the dog’s personality: For training to be effective, it’s important to understand and identify the dog’s personality. Therefore, we first observe the dog. Is he introverted or extroverted, fearful or confident. We also assess their response to various stimuli.

Understanding of family dynamics: Knowing how the dog interacts with different family members and their roles in the dog’s life is another aspect we look at.

Identification of training objectives: We work with the owner/family in defining specific goals for their dog and their family as a whole as it relates to their canine companion.

Consideration of available time and dedication: We discuss with the family and take into account how much time the owner(s) can realistically commit to training and practice.

Setting achievable goals for the dog and owner: This is primarily dependent on owner’s time, energy and resources and what they are willing to tolerate. For example, if the family lives in a remote area with few distractions, they may be content with having their dog bark at a stranger, while someone who lives in densely populated urban area would want to eliminate that behavior.

Clear understanding of what can be accomplished: Ensuring that both the owner and trainer have a realistic understanding of the dog’s potential and limitations.

Designing training programs specific to each case: This is the resulting product based on the information gained from observing and understanding the dog and the conversations with the owner, their goals, aspirations and available resources and time.

Adapting methods to match individual circumstances: Life isn’t straight forward and so our training method can’t be rigid. We adapt and adjust as needed if situation, lifestyle or circumstances change.

Ensuring each dog and owner embark on a unique journey: Recognizing that progress varies from one dog-owner pair to another and celebrating each small victory along the way is important and rewarding.

Striving for harmonious and fulfilling companionship: Ultimately, the goal is for the dog and owner to enjoy a loving and mutually beneficial relationship.

Adjusting training as needed to achieve long-term success: Adapting the training approach as the dog matures or encounters new situations.

Providing continued guidance and support: Offering follow-up sessions, virtual meeting or text chats, to address any new challenges that may arise.
