We all grew up with the notion that dogs should be fed from a bowl. But nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, dogs for ages have been fed in this way, but they also had jobs. Farm dogs, rat seeking dogs, herding dog, military dogs, search and rescue dogs, etc. They had a full time job during the day, so feeding them from a bowl wasn’t a big deal.

These days, millions of dogs sit around doing absolutely nothing. They have warm beds, special outfits and eagerly wait to be paid attention to. Working dogs have become pet-dogs, and since genetically it’s not natural for them to just sit in the house and stare out the window for 15hours per day or more, our dogs have become chronically bored out of their minds. Most of the behavioral issues we see today are as a result of this chronic boredom.

Therefore, as responsible pet dog owners, we need to find other ways to satisfy their natural needs. Enter snuffle-mat, Snuffle-what?!  Snuffle mat! Snuffle mats are all the rage these days, and for good reasons. Snuffle mats are meant to simulate grass and can satisfy dog’s natural foraging needs as well as providing a sensory experience.

Pet dogs that sit around all day should not be fed from a silver bowl. They need to work for their food. Feeding during walks, or as a reward during training is the preferred method. Adding a snuffle mat to their daily feeding routine helps to satisfy their foraging needs, sensory needs and provides a level of mental stimulation.

Below is a collection of some of my favorite snuffle mats. I own most of those and give them out as gifts whenever I can. Try it out and I guarantee your dog will love it.

  • Original Snuffle Mats
  • Silicone Snuffle Mats
